Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

Every student can learn just not on the same day or in the same way - George Evans

The Villages Charter School (VCS) is dedicated to nurturing productive citizens and life-long learners through an integrated, relevant curriculum tailored to the individual needs of students. We place a priority on identifying students' learning styles and developing strategies that enable students to succeed. We are contracted with the Sumter County School Board (our charter) and are funded the same as other public schools.

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Program is for children who have a disability. The Villages Charter School and Sumter County Schools are committed to meeting the unique needs of these children. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) re-authorized in 2004, children with any disabilities listed under that law are guaranteed a “free appropriate public education” in the “least restrictive environment,” along with all appropriate related services required for your child to benefit from his or her education. If you believe that your child has a disability that keeps him or her from being successful in school, please contact the school counselor. As a parent, you have the right to request an evaluation. If your child is identified as having a disability, he or she is entitled to certain rights. These rights are explained in a document called Summary of Procedural Safeguards for Students with Disabilities. Copies of these rights are given and explained to parents during the referral process and at least one time a school year if your child is determined to have a disability. Should you wish to receive an additional copy of this document, please call 352-793-2315, extension 50259. Through the Florida School Choice, a Gardiner Scholarship or a McKay Scholarship is available to all students who qualify.

The State of Florida requires that a Charter School be unique, offering an education that raises a higher standard and provides learning opportunities not offered in the regular public school setting. The Villages Charter School provides ESE services as identified by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team.

If you have any questions, please contact your child's school counselor.
