Your child will purchase a planner this year. The planner will help them develop goals, keep their assignments organized, and remind them to prepare for upcoming tests, projects, and homework assignments. It will also serve as a guide to keep you informed on what we’re doing at school on a daily basis. Please check their homework and initial for the appropriate day and assignment.
We will have spelling tests on Friday. Language Arts tests will follow the end of a unit. This may vary according to the particular skill assessed. Math assessments are given Mid-chapter and after every chapter, which are generally about every two weeks. Your child will be assigned a Science, Social Studies, or Language Arts project each nine weeks. This is to be completed at home and occasionally when time is allowed in class. Please check our website and your child’s binder nightly for more information.
Students are expected to turn in all assignments when they are due unless they have an absence. Makeup work must be turned in within the number of days missed plus one day to receive credit. Any assignment turned in a day late will only be given a maximum of 60% and will earn a zero thereafter. All projects are due on the due date. No late projects will be accepted, even if the child is absent (see handbook pg. 19).
Nightly Reading Logs
Please encourage your child to read nightly for at least 20 minutes. Data shows that this is the best way for your son or daughter to grow as an independent reader. Please remember library books are read nightly. Each book should be on his/her reading level. Every child will be assigned an individual goal each nine weeks that they will be expected to meet.
Every student should bring home a book they enjoy reading. HAPPY READING!
Our Lunchtime is 11:10-11:35a.m. We have a beautiful cafeteria. Come and check it out and have lunch with your child! Your child can also purchase many items that are not included with school lunch, so please plan accordingly!
Other Important Information:
I am having the children glue their passwords inside the front cover of their agenda. The Reading and Social Studies (www.connect-ed.com) passwords are still being processed and we will add them as soon as possible. In the meantime, you may access www.thinkcentral.com and explore the Math and Science Curriculum and all the wonderful resources that go with it.
Please have your child explain the reading log to you. If you have any questions, please email or call. Your child should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly.
Box Tops: Send in your box tops! Box Tops help raise funds for our school and we use those funds for equipment and other special resources such as the Positive Message Program on our Morning Announcements. Each class competes to see who can collect the most box tops. The winning classrooms get a special prize.
The students will be doing Cold Reads as homework once weekly . A cold read is a reading passage that a student has not read before. They have learned strategies on how to read one of these passages and how to answer the questions. These strategies are below in a PDF file. Please ensure your child is doing his/her very best work on the homework. Each piece of homework has a very specific purpose to help your child gain success in each phase of fourth grade.
The students will be glueing all their passwords on the back page of their agenda with the corresponding website once they receive them. Please explore www.thinkcentral.com. It is an online version of the students Math book as well as extra practice, remedial instruction, enhanced instruction, video explanations, etc. Wonderful resources to help you and your child understand the math curriculum.
I will be giving the children a pre-test for Spelling on Friday or Monday. If they score 90% on the pretest, they are exempt from the weekly homework and Thursday post-test. Study as this is a great opportunity to lessen the load.
Have fun studying spelling by going to www.spellingcity.com . Search for The Villages Charter Elementary School and click on my name "Anne Crane". Choose the list the kids are studying this week and all kinds of different games come up using this weeks words! Happy playing!
Remember, they should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly and give a 1 or 2 sentence summary of what they read during that time in their reading log. Homework is posted online for your convenience so be sure to check the website often for updates.
Math: All Standards Review
Writing: Four Paragraph Essay (expository and opinion)
