Reading classes are my 1st, 2nd,5th, and 7th periods.
Language Arts classes are my 3rd and 4th periods.
Every week we will study a root of the week. Students will receive a list of the words in class on Monday or Tuesday in class and then the quiz on those words will be Friday. These root word quizzes are 40% of their grades. If a list is lost, you can find all the roots on my website as a PDF. The lists are in order that we will study them.
Each month there will be one or two focus skills. The month of September we are working on central idea and relevant details. Every week there is a list of 10 vocabulary words that contain a common root that we will study. The quiz is Friday. Students will have homework every week to help them practice the root words.
Homework: Monday is a root work practice page
Wednesday will be a mystery reading comprehension page. This important one page practice page allows the students to deepen their reading skills while practicing inference skills as well. The mystery pages are graded for completeness. I want the students to try and solve the mystery but it is okay if they cannot find the correct solution.
LANGUAGE ARTS NEWS:
The first nine weeks in the Language Art classes has a focus on fiction skills including figurative language, theme, elements of a story, and flashback as we read the Touching Spirit Bear book. Every student will be assigned their own copy of the novel so they can read it and finish assignments at home. The Language Arts classes are using the google classroom to aid their learning. Students can check this resource for the lastest classwork and assignments.
Touching Spirit Bear update:
Read chapters 14-17 and complete the skyward assignment by Monday, 9/25. Students will read and test on chapters 14-28 on Friday 9/29. All students have a book that they can read on their own at home if needed.
NO RED INK: No Red Ink is an online resource for students to perfect their English, writing and grammar skills. Every week students will be assigned one or two topics that they will need to master. This is a web based program that the students will use their chrome books to access.
Homework: Currently, there is not a set homework schedule. However, students who do not finish classwork will need to complete those assignments for homework.
