Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

Every student can learn just not on the same day or in the same way - George Evans

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program is for qualifying children (age 3-21) who have a disability or who are in the Gifted Program.  Other services overseen by the ESE department include  English as a Second Language (ESOL) and Secton 504.  This department also works within the schools to support the Response to Intervention (RtI) process.

The ESE programming is guided by legislation on both the state and federal levels.  Students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a Section 504 plan have specific Civil Rights protections.  All of the information regarding the rights of these students and their parents/guardians are detailed in the Procedural Safeguards, which can be accessed in the link below.

Child Find is a part of the federal Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which mandates that schools must find and evaluate students who may have a disability at no cost to families.  Students can be referred by members of their family or any school personnel who believes that the student may have a disability associated with his or her education.

At the Villages Charter School (VCS) all students participate in an inclusion model, meaning that all services are provide for students with an IEP or Section 504 plan in the general education classroom.  While VCS does not provide all services or programs for students with disabilities, the Sumter County School District(SCSD) has programming available for any student need.  SCSD is our Local Education Agency (LEA) who maintains administrative control over VCS and serves as a conduit for most of the funding to operate VCS.

Exceptional Student Education is not familar to many families.  For this reason, the ESE staff strive to inform families about the processes and their rights within each process to those who reach out.  Please feel free to contact any ESE Staffing Specialist at the phone numbers below.
