Florida Education Commissioner Issues Press Release
VCS Adopts New CDC Quarantine Guidelines
The Villages Charter School students and employees will face shorter COVID-19 quarantine periods, effective immediately. The change is based on new guidelines from the CDC, which reduced the quarantine period from 14 days to 10 days for students and staff who are asymptomatic. The district is implementing the changes with the support of the Florida and Sumter County Health Departments.
Students and staff who test positive for the virus will be allowed to return to school and work after meeting the following criteria:
- At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared, and
- At least 24 hours have passed without fever and without the use of fever-reducing medications, and
- Symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, etc.) have improved.
Those who test positive without symptoms will be allowed to return after at least 10 days have passed since the specimen collection date of the first positive lab test. For clarification, a positive lab test is defined as a swab either nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal, a blood test for antigens is not specific enough to determine acute infection with COVID-19. Students and employees with severe illness or who are severely immunocompromised may need to be isolated for 20 days, based on the recommendation from a healthcare professional.
A person found to have been in close contact with someone who tests positive may take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ONLY (no rapid testing) test on Day 6 or later. If the test is negative, that person may leave quarantine after Day 7. Without testing, quarantine can end after Day 10 as long as no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring. A student or staff member is not permitted to end quarantine after the completion of Day 7 until a negative PCR test result has been received and a copy has been provided to either the clinic nurse or administration. If a member of the household tests positive for COVID 19, they are required to quarantine for 10 days. If PCR testing on or after Day 6 is not completed, any students or staff members in the household will be required to quarantine for an additional 10 days and may return to work/school after the completion of Day 20.
Those who develop symptoms while quarantined may take a PCR test on Day 6 or later. If the test is negative, they may return to school or work after Day 7. VCS is also working with the Sumter County Health Department to modify return dates for those currently being quarantined.
See the FAQ document released by the Florida Department of Health below. For more information, please visit the CDC’s website or contact your health provider or VCS School Nurse.
