Helpful information for High School parents.

A school library is a third space for learning, between the classroom and home, important for on-site, personalized, and self-directed exploration.

Here to Help

Our goals in the media center are to:

Create an environment that inspires students to pursue their interests and expand their horizons through reading
Become effective users of information and ideas
Develop college and career readiness skills
Enable students to become independent, lifelong learners

Fridays

We encourage students to use the media center as a place for reading, studying, and conducting research in a quiet atmosphere. You can also:

Print papers.
Meet with mentors or tutors.
Get assistance with Chromebooks.
Volunteer as a helper in the media center to earn community service hours.
Share your artistic talents with us as we create displays to promote media resources and events.

Students must scan their ID badges upon entering and exiting the media center.

Políticas

We have established the following policies to encourage students to uphold our core value of stewardship as they use media center resources:

Three books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed for another two-week period if there are no other requests for them. Late books and overdue fines will restrict signing out additional items.
The replacement cost will be charged for lost or damaged books. Refunds will be given if the book is found and returned before the end of June of the current school year.
Late books will be charged $0.05 per day. Textbooks will be charged $0.10 per day and must be after a five-day grace period.
There is no charge for black and white printing; color printing is $0.25 per page. Students may print before and after school.
Chromebooks are expected to be fully charged each day. Students will not be given a Chromebook and/or charger if their Chromebook is not fully charged.
Students are asked to be respectful of others and use the media center as a place for reading, studying, and conducting research in a quiet atmosphere.
Students must check in and out of the media center by scanning their ID badges.
All areas that you have used must be wiped down before you leave.

In addition to our libraries, students may also get books from a variety of sources and still take AR tests. For example, public libraries, teacher’s classrooms, other TVCS school libraries and various online sources.

Axis360 (eBooks & audiobooks) is available to all students of TVCS. See below for more information.

Access your personal library account

Pulse aquí and follow these steps:

Click on The Villages High School link
Click on Login (in the top right corner)
Enter this info:
- Username: first initial + 10-digit student ID # (your Skyward username) and
- Password: buffalo (same for all students)

Once in Destiny Quest, you can:

click on My Info to see your current check outs
click Quest Home for book recommendations
click on Advanced Search to find books. Add books to your Personal List o Want to Read

To search for books in our library:

Exit Destiny Quest
Select Catalog.
To see what items you have checked out and their due dates, fines, or holds, select My Info.

Axis 360

Pulse aquí and follow these steps:

Enter this info:
- Username: first initial + 10-digit student ID # (your Skyward username) and
- Password: buffalo (same for all students)
Read on your Chromebook or download the Axis 360 App from App Store or Google Play for your phone.

Reading Resources

Florida Teens Read 2024-2025

This program is designed to entice teens to read. In order to engage their interest and to provide a spur to critical thinking, the book selections include those that involve sensitive issues. The content of some of the titles may be more mature than younger students may have previously encountered. Please recognize that this is a voluntary reading program. Not every book selected will suit every student. In a democratic society, a variety of ideas must find voice. As readers, teens have the choice to read the more mature titles or to close the book.

Book Seer – Type the title and author of the book that you just finished and see what the wise one recommends to you.

College Bound Reading – Revised every 5 years, these lists will help you round out your reading as you prepare for college entrance exams and courses.

EDSITEment! – Recommended reading list for college-bound students; includes audio, images, videos, and websites.

Fantastic Fiction – Follow your favorite young adult authors to learn about their new and upcoming books.

Goodreads – Search for books by title and genre; create an account and track what you read.

Literature-Map – If you’re looking for a new author to read, you can find similar authors using the literature map.

YALSA’s Teen Book Finder App & Database – Free online database & app to access nearly YA titles on your phone.

What Should I Read Next – Type the title of the book you just read and find your next book!

Digital Citizenship and Safety Course – earn 15 minutes for each of the 6 units that are available in both English and Spanish. Units may be completed only once.

Mindset Videos and Resources for PI Time – earn 30 minutes for each article. Credit will be awarded only once to one parent for a maximum of 4.0 hours per household.

VHS PI Informational Books – earn two informational hours per book after successfully completing a 10-question quiz. A few of the shorter books are only one informational hour. Checkout books and complete tests between 7:00 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Service Hours

Purchase a book requested by our students. Service PI time for donations is calculated as: a $50 Donation = 1/2 hour of PI time.

Tech Tips for VHS

23-24 Chromebook 1-1 Video for Students and Parents – New enrollees must watch a training video with a parent or guardian prior to receiving a Chromebook.

23-24 VHS Parent/Student Google Form – Parent/guardian and student must complete this form after watching the video.

Chromebook Device Usage Agreement – Bring this signed agreement to the VHS Media Center to receive your Chromebook.

Chromebook Issues?

Powerwashing your Chromebook can correct these issues:

Chromebook will not turn on
Assignments in databases cannot be accessed

You can powerwash your Chromebook at home by following these steps or bringing it to the media center. For more troubleshooting with your device, please explore these Chromebook tips.

Remember…

You are required to always bring a fully charged Chromebook each day.
You have a responsibility to maintain the device issued to you and pay for repairs.
